General Membership Meeting Minutes for September 10, 2008
A General Membership Meeting of the Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills was called to order by President Sandy Loprete at approximately 7:45 p.m., at the Loprete home in Short Hills. There were 42 active members present.
President’s Welcome:
Sandy welcomed everyone to the first GMM of the 2008-09 season
Announced that we gave a 95th Anniversary gift of $40,000 to the East Orange Public Library from the proceeds of the Red and White Ball in May
Ilona Volz started as JLOSH office manager in August, replacing Bonnie Kenneslar, who took a new job with Rutgers University
Fundraising Council:
Antiques Roadshow fundraiser is Thursday, Oct. 23, 6:30 p.m., at Short Hills Club. $25 donation to JLOSH includes admission to event and appraisal of one item by JLOSH sustainer Kathy Nye, owner of Dawson and Nye Auction House. Appraisal can be used for official insurance purposes. Event sponsored by Bollinger Insurance and will include information on insuring valuables/antiques. RSVP must be made in advance
Applications for Women of Vision Community Service Award nominees are on jlosh.org and are due in October
James and the Giant Peach, our Children’s Theater Event, is January 24
Community Council:
Children’s Best Interest committee hosted a college informational fair in May, which was attended by approximately 150 foster children. This event, held in conjunction with Essex County court system, was a huge success. Considering another information fair in late fall/early winter
Met with Penny Solkolowski and Jeanne Warnock of Family Intervention Services in South Orange. May be an opportunity here to work with at-risk women and teens
It was announced that Amanda Damesek will be the new chair of The Littlest Volunteers committee. TLV is continuing its curriculum in the Millburn Schools’ second grades. The committee will make a kit that can be used to implement the TLV curriculum in other schools
Tie-a-Ribbon DIAD will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11. Volunteers will tie pink ribbons, donated by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, on main streets in Short Hills and Springfield to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to show support for JLOSH member Tracy Beveridge
Jake’s Ride, a bike-a-thon to benefit The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation, will be held on Oct. 5, in Short Hills. Volunteers are needed. Event organized by Jake Silverman, a student at Millburn Middle School, who has been diagnosed with childhood-onset dystonia.
Kate Lee, SPAC A delegate, noted that there’s one month left to register to vote in the local and national elections on Nov. 4

Announced the roster of advisors and advisees
Thanked members who participated in the bone marrow drive for JLOSH member Lisa Mottesi, who is suffering from a rare form of leukemia. Two possible matches have been found
Provisional informational coffees/meetings will be held throughout October. Please forward names of prospective members to Jane Carano or Marianne Connor
Small Group Meetings will be held on Oct. 15 in the morning and evening and on Oct. 16 in the morning at sustainers’ homes in lieu of a General Membership Meeting
