Board of Directors Meeting Minutes for December 3, 2008
Present: Robin Grapkowski, Anthea Higgins, Joy Kalfus, Joi Koenig, Philicia Levinson, Sandy Loprete, Kathy Mastriano, Shelly Oliver-Hollis, Elizabeth Pederson. Absent: Sara D’Andrea, Jane Martinez, Myriam Scicolone.
A regular meeting of the Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills Board of Directors was called to order by President Sandy Loprete at approximately 7:45 p.m., in the Junior League office, 105 Main Street, Millburn, NJ.
Minutes from the November 12, 2008 Board Meeting were reviewed and approved as amended.
PRESIDENT
Vicki Clark’s visit to JLOSH in November was a success. During that visit, Vicki met with leadership. Reviewed our Strategic Plan and advised us to break it down in to smaller goals that are achievable over 3 to 5 years.
Sandy asked each council to draft two to three “Did You Know…” facts about JLOSH to update our current displays for WOV luncheons/events.
Sandy and Kathy met with JL of Montclair/Newark to discuss its recent endowment campaign. JLMN had a significant amount of its goal committed prior to launch of campaign. We should work now to get ready for similar campaign and create a timeline to launch. Tips for a successful campaign: make it personal – let members know that we are continuing the JLOSH legacy of 95 years of community service; solicit sustainers to sign-on in a visible way; take ideas to committee chairs to gather information. Possible contest among membership to “name” the campaign?
MEMBERSHIP
In the absence of Sara and Myriam, we reviewed Myriam’s report and noted upcoming meeting dates (1/7 Board Meeting at JLOSH Building; 1/14 GMM at Women’s Club of Maplewood; 1/21 Board Social with Provisionals at JLOSH Building; 2/25 Meet the Chairs, location TBD). The take-away from advisor/member meetings: work to make new members feel welcome, especially those members living outside of Millburn/SH. Committee chairs need to manage less via email and more person-to-person.
TREASURER
Met with tenant to review terms discussed at last board meeting. Instead of a promissory note, the tenant has been advised to have an expanded guarantee. Will meet again with tenant on Friday, Dec. 5. Philicia will update board at January meeting with final decision.
COMMUNITY
Held successful Thanksgiving Basket event. Event went smoothly. Older children helped-out and the younger children made crafts for the bags.
A representative from Family Intervention Services to speak at January GMM. Will host a cooking event at Kings Cooking Studio with young ladies served by FIS, on Dec. 10.
FUNDRAISING
Women of Vision Community Service Award honorees were selected on 11/24, at an open meeting: Betsy Zimmerman, of Hoop-a-paluza; Connie Dwyer, of St. Michaels Medical Center; and JLOSH Sustainer Millie Denton. All honorees have accepted nomination. Need to move date of luncheon due to a scheduling conflict. New proposed date: April 22.
The next Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, 7:30 p.m., at the Junior League office.
The meeting was adjourned by Sandy at 9:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by:
Joy Kalfus
