2000-2004

In 2001, the JLOSH responded to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by supporting theMillburn-Short Hills Chapter of the American Red Cross Liberty Disaster Relief Fund's Fly the Flag campaign through a donation of $9,300 and numerous volunteer hours.

In 2001, two new community programs and committees were established: the East Orange Pregnant Teen Wellness project and Tillmes House. East Orange Pregnant Teen Wellness was a pilot program in 2001-2002, which assisted the East Orange Health Department staff with assessing the needs of pregnant teens and developing appropriate programs to meet their needs. Tillmes House is a program that provides life skill workshops for young girls aged 12 through 18 who are in residence for up to sixty days at Tillmes House, a crisis center for girls in East Orange.

In 2002, on the fundraising side, the League held its first "Women of Vision Community Service Awards Luncheon" at the Pleasantdale Chateau with over 250 members, corporate sponsors and community organizations in attendance. This event featured Dee Dee Myers (the first female press secretary to a U.S. president), and also honored three community leaders with special awards presented by Tiffany & Co. The event was sponsored by PNC Bank (and numerous other companies) and raised over $30,000 for the League's community programs.

In 2003, on the community side, the League hosted "Support the Troops Saturday"
at the Baer Community Center in Millburn where packages were assembled and sent to men and women in a platoon currently deployed overseas through "Operation Interdependence" (OI).

The later part of 2003 and early 2004 were full of great change and celebration for our league as we began our 90th year anniversary. The 90th Anniversary Celebration, after over a year of planning, was held at the Pleasantdale Chateau in West Orange, NJ on April 30th, 2004. Filled to capacity, the event, with a theme of “Design of the Times” raised a staggering $180,000, allowing the League to give as a gift to Family Connections, a check for $90,000 to help refurbish their facilities in Orange New Jersey and establish a sorely needed playground for the children that the organization help each year, through family counseling, individual therapy and other means.

In 2004, the Community Research Committee, with membership input, market research and a thorough needs assessment of our service area, the list was winnowed down and ended with the establishment of our newest community projects: Safe Haven and Community in Action. Focusing on domestic violence issues, Safe Haven had already proven itself to be off to a great start when they were awarded byVerizon Wireless’ HopeLine Program a grant of $10,000 to help establish a “Harmony Room” in the newly established Essex County women’s shelter.
